This is indeed a little debate that I would like to start. I want to know how many of you think that immortality is actually achievable by human beings. The image above can be explained through this link: Please login or register to view this link. . A Russian scientist states that human immortality is achievable by the year of 2045. What do you think?

Can we as humans ever be immortal?

No, I don't think humans could ever be immortal. When we reach old age, no one wants to live a little longer because they know they're time has passed, and if we all become immortal, soon the world will be overpopulated. Overpopulation means more drainage or the Earth's resources, so soon life will not be sustainable on Earth, and all types of life will die.

Nope. Even if you transfer your personality to those so called avatars, you aren't considered "Alive".

Okay, the question about immortality and a different vessel as your body is :
Will i have the same conscience there?
As in, are you going to be aware that you are alive again?

This is a question no science can answer because it is only for the test subject to find out with. Also, you must realize with immortality comes massive power compared to a regular human. Who will be in control if this power goes out of control?

What will happen if the intentions of these people is actually power. What if they get the powers of the world to join this program, but somehow manipulate their brains into doing things to this team's likings?

Also, you see my current project at work at 2045.com :)

Who knows if the cyborg like bodies will stop working during a solar flare? There are other factors as well.

I'm getting the strong urge to make a Doctor who referance. [Dopplegangers]

... I don't think this will be possible. The sheer thought of it is mind numbing... However, replacing body parts with others that still function is entirely possible. [By other body parts I mean mechanical ones.]

Like Marian said, even if this was feasible and even possible, such power does not belong in the hands of mankind. You should not be able to choose when you die and likewise, you should not be able to chose when you live. This power would branch off of money with the government, and since we all know what money can do to someone... Add immortality. Watch some sci-fi movies.

Depends on what you would define as immortality. If you mean a human body living forever, then no. If you mean the human mind existing forever through a machine, then yes, it could be possible.

    Yes.
The technology from which these beings will be developed exists and has existed for some time now.
And if you need a example take a steam locomotive and compare it to a mag lev bullet train.
From where we were to where we are now.
And we don't accept death for moral or ethical reasons but rather because our mental and physical capabilities are depleted to the point that a continued existence in a decaying biological form makes death a welcome release.

Now consider if you were able to exist indefinitely at the peak of your phyiscal and mental abilities. How many advances have been delayed if not lost completely because the next expert had to try and pick up where the current expert had to leave off, (and yes that sword cuts both ways) in most cases death doesn't promote growth unless your in the fertilizer business.

Will the "vessel" in which this being exist be human? won't know till we get there.

Anyway, moot point since we all know the world will end on 12/21/12....mmmkay

although I believe the timeline they predict might be a 100 yrs or so too optimistic

Idk about humans, but there are some organisms already that are ”immortal” (in the sence that they can prevent dying from old age) these sed things (i believe there's a jelly fish example) can preduce there old body parts and then exchange them for the old ones renewing themselfs when needed. Ofc they die from other causes like murder, accidents, illness, etc but wile definitely not indestructible, they can be viewed as ”mock-immortal”

Robots hmmm? Well this is an interesting subject and one that it can be done. Well i like to believe that this can be achieved at a higher level. But in order to preserve your body you must find a way for your cells not to decrease, keep the circulation running without closing the blood tubes. I believe that in order to go around this, new mechanism can be placed on the system to keep the blood flowing freely through the body so it fills ever gap of your circulation to keep the skin young. I doubt your brain could be placed on the head of a robot because there wont have any connection lines for the brain to connect to, and even if this was possible the brain wont be able to function properly. But that doesnt mean you cannot have a robotic body. Studies has been done that people can have a ticker for the heart to keep it pumping, others have had their lost arm replaced by a robotic one, and they are looking for different parts of the body to make it possible for it to work. But why does it have to be robots? What if they decided to create a virtual world were it records you in every possible way and is then programmed and reserved in a machine and we are all sleep and we can have the real Matrix! or better yet, have John Corner to create a terminator that looks human but he can in fact bring hell down to earth

    Immortality, no, it wouldn't happen.
Transfer of consciousness, maybe, by a long shot. But immortality I will guarantee you won't happen.

Let me be the first user to say yes.

Why not? It's just changing a huge amount of your body around the main parts, and later all of it into another way of existence. Might sound a bit drastic... but then again, this is only a part of the evolutionary game. The real question is not really if it happens, but how we deal with it.

I'd say it is "Technically" Possible. Artificial parts are capable of replacing real ones. I remember watching a show one time about science experiments that weren't supposed to be made public. One of the experiments was the transfer of a monkey's brain to a different monkey's body. After the procedure, the monkey was in fact able to move *Slightly* and respond to basic signals. This was all captured on video, it wasn't just some person blurting out information.

Of course, there's many things that would require much more research, such as allowing the brain to take control of said body, or how to avoid damage during the brain's procedure. There's also the problem, as StriK.eR said previously, that a solar flare, or other form of EMP, could cause these bodies to be rendered defunct, likely damaging the brain also.

Also, as many other users have been saying, there's the matter of what we'd do with said ability. While it could technically be used for worldwide aid, it is unlikely that mankind's lust for power could be suppressed, and a war for domination would likely occur.

Though, if you think about it. A very basic version of this "Immortality" technically, is possible. Not with our current level of knowledge, but in the future, a very real possibility.
